' Jones von Drehle Vineyards & Winery - Story

Jones von Drehle Vineyards and Winery is a family-owned farm established in 2007 by two families, Diana and Chuck Jones and Ronnie and Raymond von Drehle.  Diana and Ronnie are sisters making this a family business. All four owners are all originally from NC, Chuck from the Asheville area and Diana, Ronnie, and Raymond from Hickory.

We are an Estate winery, producing our wines solely from the 30 acres of fruit we grow on this property.  We buy no fruit or juice from anyone and have been that way from the beginning.  So, really, the vineyard controls our destiny. We are an Old World Classical French-style winery with dry wine varietals such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Viognier, and Steel and Barrel Chardonnay and many more.

The 30 acres of vineyard sits on the estate that is a little over 80 acres. The 80 acres of land originally started out as 65 acres; we have slowly grown over the last few years. In 2007, the Jones’ were looking in a 10-mile radius for land in the Yadkin Valley to purchase to begin this journey. They got lost on Old Railroad Grade Road in Thurmond and found the land on accident. They thought it would be the perfect spot and it just happened to be for sale. The sale was completed 7 days later.

In 2008, all of the soil testing and land clearing was done to get ready to plant in 2009. All 30 acres were planted at one time by hand; that is over 24,300 vines! 2012 was a great year for the vineyard and was the first harvest. The buildings were completed as well and a soft opening happened in May 2013, then an official Grand Opening in May 2014.  We are now in about 230 Wine Shops and Restaurants across the state and have ventured into South Carolina.

Please come by, do a tasting, and stay for a while; we would love to meet you.
